1. การที่แผ่นทวีปเคลื่อนที่ชนกัน
เกิดได้สามกรณีคือ ถ้าเกิดว่าแผ่นนํ้า ชนกับแผ่นนํ้า ทำให้เกิดแนวเลือนของภูเขาไฟที่รุนแรง และแนวแผ่นดินไหวที่รุนแรว
2. การที่แผ่นทวีปเกิดการเคลื่อนที่แยกออกจากกัน
เกิดเป็นหุบเขาทรุด
3. เกิดจากการที่แผ่นทวีปนั้นเกิดการเคลื่อนที่ผ่านกัน เกิดเป็นรอยเลื่อนทรานฟอร์ม
จากปัจจัยดังกล่าวที่ผ่านมานี้ ทำให้เปลือกโลกของเราเกิดการเคลื่อนที่ได้ทั้งสิ้น

1) หลักฐานจากรอยต่อของทวีป จากการที่เวเกเนอร์ได้อธิบายว่าการเชื่อมต่อของทวีปนั้นเป็นไปได้อย่างไม่สมบูรณ์เนื่องจากกว่า บริเวณชายฝั่งจะถูกกัดเซาะ แต่ทว่าในปี 2508 นายเซอร์ เอดวาร์ด บูลลาร์ค นักธรณีฟิสิกซ์ชาวอังกฤษได้ใช้ขอบทวีปที่มีความลึกประมาณ 2 กิโลเมตร เพราะว่าขอบชายฝั่งนี้มีการสำรวจว่าโดนกัดเซาะชายฝั่งน้อยที่สุด ซึ่งบริเวณนี้เป็นรอยต่อแนวทวีปซึ่งสามารถต่อกันได้แนบสนิทพอดี
